The Supreme Gundog
Get to Know the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
The Griffon was built for one job: to be the walking hunter’s do-everything gun dog. It quarters close, points staunchly, faces cold water and heavy cover without complaint, and then turns into a calm, devoted housedog the moment the gun is cased. That split — relentless afield, an off-switch at home — is the whole character of the breed.
None of that happened by accident. A young Dutchman named Eduard Korthals assembled it deliberately in the 1870s and 80s, and France has guarded the standard ever since. We tell the full, sourced story — the history, the temperament, the five competing standards — in our breed overview.

How the Griffon Stacks Up
Almost nobody comes to the Griffon first. You arrive from a Lab, a Shorthair, a Vizsla. A fair, side-by-side look at range, coat, temperament, and fit — so you can tell whether the WPG is actually your dog.
