Whiskeytown’s Pepper TAN WRT

We’re excited for our upcoming litter between Whiskeytown’s Pepper TAN WRT and Flatbrooks Walker! Thank you for your interest in joining our waitlist!

We own the dam, Pepper. She is registered with AKC, UKC, and NAVHDA, and comes from exceptional lines on both sides. She’s recently earned her UKC TAN and WRT (for natural ability and water retrieve) and is working toward her UKC GUN and AKC Junior Hunter titles this fall (2026). She has also been confirmed by a UKC WPG breed specialist with an excellent rating — you can see her full evaluation in the health section below.

Not sure what those letters mean? You’re in good company — most of our families aren’t hunters or testing folks when they start. Our quick guide to title acronyms decodes every one in plain English.

Pepper's Sire

GUN CH TR Riri des Grandes Origines

GUN CH TR Riri des Grandes Origines - Pepper's sire - Wirehaired Pointing Griffon

A French import owned by Carroll Kemp of Seaview Sporting Dogs. Riri is a multi‑country Field Champion (Italy, Slovakia, France), Trophee Griffon Korthals Europe winner (2023), and Champion of France in conformation. He competed in 36 European field trials by age four. You can see his full record and photos on his page at Seaview.

His French pedigree is exceptional in a way the titles alone don’t capture. On the SCC stud book, Riri carries a cotation of 4/6 (ÉLITE B)— and it runs in the family: his own dam is a 6/6 producer (the top tier the French club awards), and the generation behind him is studded with six dogs rated 6/6, nearly all carrying HD-A hips. In the French system, those numbers are earned across conformation, field work, and health testing together — so they’re a hard-to-fake signal of quality woven right into Pepper’s sire line. See how the cotation system works »

The letters in his name — GUN CH TR — are the titles he’s earning since coming stateside, and they only tell part of the story: his biggest wins came in Europe before he was imported and never made it into his American name. Pepper's Dam

Whiskeytown's Phoenix Miracle TAN

Whiskeytown's Phoenix Miracle - Pepper's dam - photo coming soon - Wirehaired Pointing Griffon

Bred by Larry Delaney at Whiskeytown Sporting Dogs. Phoenix won AKC Best of Breed at just six months old—defeating all class winners of both sexes—and passed the UKC TAN.

Like Pepper’s sire, Phoenix’s pedigree is essentially all French — a lineage of imported Korthals Griffons carrying French cotation scores generation after generation. Cotation is the French club’s breeding-stock ranking, from 1 (simply confirmed) up to 6 (“Élite recommandé,” the top grade), and it’s only earned by combining conformation, field work, and hip testing in one dog. How the cotation system works »

We’ve now traced both of her parents’ French pedigrees, and the grades are about as strong as they get. Multiple dogs just behind Phoenix carry the top Cotation 6 grade — including one, Big Boss des Plaines du Mare a l’Eau, who was a national champion in France — with the rest grading Cotation 4, the level reserved for proven, recommended breeding stock. Nearly every dog behind her is also certified clear or near-clear on hips. In plain terms: her pedigree is stacked with French Griffons that earned their ranking the hard way — in the show ring, in the field, and at the vet, all in the same dog.

It’s also worth knowing the kennel behind her. Whiskeytown Sporting Dogs is one of the most decorated Wirehaired Pointing Griffon programs in North America — the AKC’s 2020 Sporting Group Breeder of the Year. Their foundation male was the first Griffon ever to earn both Grand Champion and Master Hunter titles; they’ve produced the top-winning WPG show bitch of all time (“Morgan,” a multiple Best in Show and two-time National Specialty winner), held the #1 WPG ranking every year since 2013, and won the breed at Westminster eight of nine years, along with multiple Hall of Fame inductees in both the field and the show ring.

To be clear, Phoenix isn’t descended from those famous show dogs — her value is in her own deep French working lineage. But it speaks volumes that she comes from a program with that depth of knowledge, health testing, and commitment to the breed. See their record at whiskeytownsportingdogs.com.

Lineage

Pepper's Pedigree

Pepper’s pedigree is overwhelmingly French. Although this breeding took place in America, the great majority of her ancestry traces directly to France — you’ll see the “LOF” (Livre des Origines Français, the official French stud book) and “SCC” (Société Centrale Canine) prefixes throughout both certificates.

Her sire, GUN CH TR Riri des Grandes Origines, is a French import whose pedigree carries cotation scores from the French Griffon club — a selection ranking unique to France that you won’t find in AKC, UKC, or NAVHDA records. Cotation grades a breeding dog from 1 (simply confirmed) up to 6 (an “elite recommended” producer), combining conformation results, working/field qualifications, and health testing. Riri himself grades 4/6 (ÉLITE B), out of a 6/6 dam and a generation packed with 6/6 dogs — about as strong as a French pedigree reads. We break the whole system down in our deep-dive on cotation & the French selection system.

Even on the dam’s side — through Whiskeytown’s Phoenix Miracle TAN — the lines are full of French Griffons, with many of the same des Grandes Origines, du Malocart, and du Bois d’Onzion kennels appearing generation after generation. The result is a litter built on deep, authentic French Korthals Griffon foundation stock.

UKC Conformation Evaluation

Beyond her health clearances, Pepper was also evaluated against the breed standard by a UKC Wirehaired Pointing Griffon breed specialist with Korthals Griffon United States. She scored Excellent across nearly every category — head and expression, coat and furnishings, structure, and movement — the top mark on the assessment. In short, an independent expert judged her to conform closely to what a Griffon is supposed to be, which is exactly the foundation you want behind a litter.

Titles & Honors Earned

Pepper is just getting started in the field, and this list will grow as she adds titles. So far she’s earned:

  • UKC TAN — Natural Ability

A certification that she has the instinctive drive, nose, and pointing ability of a versatile hunting Griffon.

  • UKC WRT — Water Retrieve

Confirms she enters the water willingly and retrieves — a core part of what makes the breed truly versatile.

  • HNQ — High Natural Qualities

Earned at a UKC GUN trial: a special recognition the judges award to a single dog that shows standout natural quality in the field, even before it has finished the training needed for a placement. In short, the judges singled her out for her raw ability.

She’s currently working toward her UKC GUN and AKC Junior Hunter titles in fall 2026.

The Bottom Line

What This Means For You

This litter pairs one of the most titled WPGs in North America with a dam carrying elite European field and conformation genetics, all backed by full OFA/CHIC health clearances. The result: puppies bred for hunting performance, sound structure, and a great off‑switch at home.

You don’t have to be a hunter to love a Griffon — many of our families simply wanted one of the best dogs they could find, and that’s exactly what this pairing is built to produce. That said, we’d love to see your pup get out and tested or hunted. Even a single NAVHDA Natural Ability test is a low-pressure, rewarding day out — and the feedback it gives us on how our dogs’ pups turn out makes us better breeders for every litter to come.
